Explore Hong Kong and American Fusion Cooking with Larry Chiu

I'm a first-generation immigrant from Hong Kong, having immigrated in the 1980s. Throughout my childhood, I was exposed to Cantonese, Hong Kong Cafe, Japanese, English, French and American cuisines. After graduating from college, I secured research and development positions at IBM, Apple Computer, and IBM Research in San Jose, California.

In my personal life, one constant that has remained steadfast is my commitment to regularly cooking for my wife and my two daughters. Growing up in Hong Kong, I was immersed in a unique blend of Western and Eastern cultures. I cherish the tradition of family gatherings and cooking, and I want to pass this passion on to my daughters.

My two daughters are now young adults with busy lives — work, relationships, and personal goals. Cooking a healthy meal at home can be challenging sometimes, but eating well gives them the energy and focus they need to tackle their priorities.

I wrote this cookbook for my daughters: one is a software developer and the other is a designer. As a first-generation Hong Kong immigrant to the USA, I wanted to share and pass on my culture to them. This cookbook aims to complement eating out with family cooking for young adults, focusing on recipes that are typically not available in restaurants.

From Move-Out Day to Masterchef

When my daughters left for college, I saw their empty pantries and realized I'd taught them everything except how to properly feed themselves. This cookbook isn’t about fancy techniques or chefs' secrets; it’s the fatherly wisdom I wish I’d handed them on move-in day. It’s about teaching life skills through simple cooking, turning a busy day into a home-cooked victory for young adults and anyone starting fresh.

Cooking Made Simple

Microwave Mastery

The microwave isn't just for reheating coffee. I teach you how to steam fresh veggies, par-cook starchy veggies and cook perfect grains in under ten minutes.

Toaster Oven Tricks

Perfect for small apartments. Learn sheet-pan meals for one or two without heating up the whole house or wasting energy.

The Instant Pot Essential

I call this fatherly wisdom in a pot. Set it, forget it, and come home to meals that taste like home without the heavy lifting.
